Portrait Beginnings

Practicing Qiang Huang's portrait method

Practicing Qiang Huang’s portrait method

I had the happiness and privilege to attend a workshop given by oil painter Qiang Huang (pronounced Chong Wong) last week. One day was dedicated to his portrait method which begins with the complete drawing and rendering of the eye(s), then moving on to the nose and relating all those parts, then moving on to the mouth before expanding out to face and head. Talk about discipline! Nailing all relationships first does indeed fetch a likeness, but one must see them in order to place them. My development will be shown in the coming days.
