Theotokos
Recently, I was asked to copy a traditional icon for a friend. The actual print that I copied from was quite like the above image, except that I softened and sweetened the facial expressions which struck me as somewhat severe. No doubt my rendition is much richer in color than the print of the actual icon. I hope that the original iconographer (who has probably been deceased a few centuries) can forgive me. The Greek lettering at the top represents “Mother of God” or Theotokos; the lower letters indicate “Jesus Christ conquers”. (oil paint on artist board; 11×14″)
