Pansy Whimsy

Such expressive faces begging to be painted! Their nodding heads agreed. This little box of beauties was a gift from my family for the springtime, and so I was inclined to memorialize them on canvas. These smaller flowers are more accurately called violas, but by any name…who can resist their attractive faces?

Decision

The dark warm color against the cool distance adds mystery to this young woman. She is at an entrance point and carries a flower of offering. The scene was inspired by a photo taken in the Philippines, and this is a sketch for a much larger painting of 16×20”.

Follow Me, Please

Here is the companion piece to the painting of the previous day. The full green apple has been sliced to reveal the juicy yellow greens of the inside, and the dark berries present contrast. Lately, I am enjoying an undertone of warm oranges brushed on before the composition. Another painting just for fun.

A still life can sometimes be so alive. The organic elements here seem to communicate with their rolling forms and nodding stems. In this small painting, I was once again going for a painterly look with fewest strokes I could manage. Fruit is always so obliging to such experiments.

Walking through a park one day, I met this dignified creature. I had never seen a black swan before, and this one was proud to spread his tuxedo whites for me. Could this have been the ugly duckling? I suspect there is no such thing.

Meet Sr.Maresa

I am Sister Maresa Lilley, a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame, located in Chardon, Ohio, USA. For many years, I have enjoyed a passion that permits me to reflect upon simple reality with a brush in hand. To capture a simple essence on canvas and to discover inherent beauty is a daily immersion.
