Stylized like folk art of the Philippines, this Mary, Mother of Jesus is dressed in a traditional handpainted skirt. Her costume is a blend of Spanish and Philippine traditional attire which often emerge together when the people “dress up” for grand occasions. Among the Catholic Filipinos, she is lovingly called, “Mama Mary.” Since bright color is celebrated, I had no qualms about surrounding her with it in this painting.

Even before Halloween this year, I noticed some commercial “decking of the halls”
I am Sister Maresa Lilley, a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame, located in Chardon, Ohio, USA. For many years, I have enjoyed a passion that permits me to reflect upon simple reality with a brush in hand. To capture a simple essence on canvas and to discover inherent beauty is a daily immersion.
