Above are the first layers of a small bouquet in a glass bottle. In the painting process, this first layer of paint is the foundation for lighter and more detailed work on top. It is always the most free brushing, because there is no attempt at the difficult yet. At this stage, one is only hoping that all will turn out as planned! I often begin a painting on an already toned board. This orangey or yellowish tone gives a slight glow or warmth to the final piece, as well as adds interest.
