January 1, 2013, the first day of the New Year… and for the Catholic Church, it is also the feast of the Solemnity of the Mother of God. This painting was inspired by a photo I took of a mother and baby of the Philippines, and since Mary and her son are for the nations, I imagined her as she might look among Filipinos. May she lead us more closely to her Son in the New Year.
